letter to Sonia

Dear Sonia,

I hope you don't mind that we are planning to change your name - Svetlana is very pretty, but we really had our heart set on Sonia Rose. So I'll call you Sonia, if you don't mind.

We thought we'd be coming to meet you around about now - They had told us that we would, but unfortunately, the Russians want to keep you on the "registry" for a couple more months. They want to give Russian families the opportunity to adopt you for another 3 months. It's kind of frustrating since they've already promised you to us - so there is a slight possibility you won't be coming home with us, but we are confident that you will. So we won't be meeting you until May. It seems a long way off and we hope you don't get too lonely over there.

We've shown your picture to a lot of people and they think you're awfully cute. We think you might even have strawberry blond hair - The picture we have of you is a little dated. We know that you are almost 6 months old It seems to have been taken when you were 2 or 3 months old, but we have grown very attached to you already. We think you are beautiful.

All your furniture is arriving tomorrow. We've been waiting months for it's delivery so we're excited that we can start arranging your room. I bought you some nice clothing already too. I found you an adorable snowsuit which I guess won't be necessary for this year since we will meet you in the spring I'll probably exchange it for the next size so you'll have it for next winter.
Alice drew a cute picture of you. Oh, Alice is your cousin. She's a lot of fun and you're going to love playing with her. She seems very excited to meet you, although I should tell you now that she has already mentioned there are some toys of hers that she does not want you to play with - like the big dog she won in Coney Island. Apparently, he's very important to her. Otherwise, she has been very generous in giving you some of her favorite books and stuffed animals. She actually wants to bring you to her class for show and tell. As I say, she is very anxious for your arrival. Did I mention that she has nicknamed you Ducky? It's because of all the ducks on the blanket you are swaddled in, in the picture they sent to us.

I hope you are ok in Perm and that they are taking good care of you. We love you a lot and can't wait to meet you.

your loving Mom and Dad
